Throughout 2019, 31 local authorities spanning eight countries (Croatia, Cyprus, France, Germany, Hungary, Italy, Latvia and Spain) participated in a year-long energy saving competition. This competition, and the Compete4SECAP project team who organised and facilitated it, include partners based in Italy, France, Germany and Spain – some of countries that are worst-affected (so far) by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Over the past few months, Swiss Renova has been renovating a multifamily structure dating back to 1963, in line with the passive housing standard. The Swiss construction company paid particular attention to sustainability and energy efficiency, with Balco Balkonkonstruktionen integrating 240 special solar modules into the building’s 96 balconies.

Germany's target for renewable energy sources to deliver 65% of its consumed electricity by 2030 seemed on track Wednesday, with 52% of electricity coming from renewables in 2020's first quarter. Renewable energy advocates, however, warned the trend is imperiled by slowdowns in building new wind and solar plants.

The renewable energy sector added 176 gigawatts (GW) of generating capacity globally in 2019, marginally lower than the (revised) 179 GW added in 2018. However, new renewable power accounted for 72 per cent of all power expansion last year, according to new data released by the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA).

As a result, European consumers will be able to save on their household bills, help reach significant EU-wide energy savings and reduce emissions.

ManagEnergy uses and enhances this role by raising the skills of energy agencies’ staff on financing and project development, ultimately making them leaders in the energy transition and increasing sustainable energy investments in Europe.

As part of the European Green Deal, the Commission will put forward a comprehensive plan to increase the EU’s 2030 climate target in September this year. The plan will propose to increase the EU’s current 2030 target of at least -40% greenhouse gas emission reductions to at least -50% and towards -55%, compared to 1990 emission levels.
