The European Commission proposed a revision of the Energy Efficiency Directive in 2021 to foster energy saving targets, and reducing primary and final energy consumption by 2030. The energy crisis has reinforced even more this need, and in May 2022 the European Commission updated the proposed target for overall energy savings under the law.

EU Climate Chief Frans Timmermans believes that the 45% renewable targets by 2030 is ambitious but possible. EU countries and the European Parliament are currently discussing about a new law to boost green energy production, including this target. The target has been proposed higher than before due to the geopolitical situation in Europe and thus to make energy more secure.
