Under the Energy Performance of Buildings Directive (EPBD), all EU countries have established independent energy performance certification systems supported by independent mechanisms of control and verification. However, current practices and tools of energy performance assessment and certification applied across Europe face a number of challenges.

The valorization and sustainable management of historic centers is a topic relevant to the cultural identity and heritage of European cities. A rational strategy to preserve the centers must consider both energy and environmental retrofitting, even if this is a complex issue requiring interdisciplinary approaches, dedicated diagnostic procedures, and specific tools. Within this context, this paper proposes an integrated method for energy and environmental analysis specifically devoted to historical building retrofit.

The conference will address policies at all levels, from EU to cities. Attention will be given to the integration of assessment systems in policies and in the decision-making processes of public authorities. The use of assessment systems in green public procurement (GPP), funding programs, regulations, urban plans, incentive-based policies will be debated. Strategies for the harmonization of public assessment systems at building, urban and territorial levels will be also discussed.

Being heavily involved in passive constructions, we wanted to create a thoughtful and sustainable building. We equipped our control house with a complete EnOcean wireless home automation system. This innovative technology works without any battery or wiring. The energy recovered during the manipulation is enough to emit a radio signal, which makes it possible, for example, to turn on the light.
