Data is central for energy research and analysis. Unfortunately, energy data is often difficult to find, mixed in different repositories, and generally fragmented. This results in a lack of efficiency for research and energy transition management.

What is Annex 70?
Annex 70 is an international collaboration of researchers, industry and government from across the globe who are working to develop methods for improving the empirical evidence on energy demand in the building stock.

The Odyssee database contains detailed energy consumption by end-use and their drivers as well as energy efficiency and CO2 related indicators. Latest available data is providing by national representatives, such as energy agencies or statistical organization, from all EU countries as well as Norway, Switzerland and Serbia.

Hotmaps is a GIS-based online software that supports authorities and energy planners to set up a strategic heating and cooling plan for their region. The definite version of the tool is now available at www.hotmaps.eu and tool developers will continue to improve it and add new calculation modules for heating and cooling planning until the end of the project life.

AI is changing the way we work, live and solve challenges. It could be most valuable as a range of applications helping us fight our biggest threat - climate change. AI can reinforce climate predictions, enable smarter decision-making for decarbonising industries ranging from building to transport, and can work out how to allocate renewable energy.
It is part of a wider ethics debate in the EU about how to use AI for the benefit of human beings, the challenges that the technology poses and how best to tackle them.

In 2017, renewable energy accounted for 19.5 % of the total energy used for heating and cooling in the European Union. This is a significant increase from 10.4 % in 2004. Increases in industrial sectors, services and households contributed to this growth. Aerothermal, geothermal and hydrothermal heat energy captured by heat pumps was also taken into account if reported by countries.

In 2017, the share of energy from renewable sources in gross final consumption of energy, in the European Union (EU), reached 17.5%, up from 17.0% in 2016 and more than double the share in 2004 (8.5%), the first year for which the data are available.
The share of renewables in gross final consumption of energy is one of the headline indicators of the Europe 2020 strategy. The EU's target is to obtain 20% of energy in gross final consumption of energy from renewable sources by 2020 and at least 32% by 2030.

In 2017, energy consumption in the European Union (EU) continued to increase for the third consecutive year, thus moving away from the energy efficiency targets. Primary energy consumption amounted to 1,561 million tonnes of oil equivalent (Mtoe), while final energy consumption reached 1,222 Mtoe. Compared with last year, both levels increased by around 1%.
