AI is changing the way we work, live and solve challenges. It could be most valuable as a range of applications helping us fight our biggest threat - climate change. AI can reinforce climate predictions, enable smarter decision-making for decarbonising industries ranging from building to transport, and can work out how to allocate renewable energy.
It is part of a wider ethics debate in the EU about how to use AI for the benefit of human beings, the challenges that the technology poses and how best to tackle them.

In 2017, renewable energy accounted for 19.5 % of the total energy used for heating and cooling in the European Union. This is a significant increase from 10.4 % in 2004. Increases in industrial sectors, services and households contributed to this growth. Aerothermal, geothermal and hydrothermal heat energy captured by heat pumps was also taken into account if reported by countries.

In 2017, the share of energy from renewable sources in gross final consumption of energy, in the European Union (EU), reached 17.5%, up from 17.0% in 2016 and more than double the share in 2004 (8.5%), the first year for which the data are available.
The share of renewables in gross final consumption of energy is one of the headline indicators of the Europe 2020 strategy. The EU's target is to obtain 20% of energy in gross final consumption of energy from renewable sources by 2020 and at least 32% by 2030.

In 2017, energy consumption in the European Union (EU) continued to increase for the third consecutive year, thus moving away from the energy efficiency targets. Primary energy consumption amounted to 1,561 million tonnes of oil equivalent (Mtoe), while final energy consumption reached 1,222 Mtoe. Compared with last year, both levels increased by around 1%.

BIM (Building Information Modelling) is the process of creating and managing information digitally across a building life-cycle. This information included in the model is not just the 3D geometrical data such as width, height, and depth, but “object oriented” and potentially comprises further dimensions such as time (4D), cost (5D), and operation (6D).

The research group ARC Engineering and Architecture La Salle and the Energy Efficiency Centre of the Jožef Stefan Institute, with the support of the Catalan Institute for Energy (ICAEN) have organized the 1st Workshop on “Innovative Methods and Tools to Facilitate the Implementation of Energy Efficiency Strategies and Action Plans - Energy Performance Assessment and Building Certification”, TIMEPAC 2019, which will take place at La Salle Campus in Barcelona, 31st January and 1st February.

In January 2019 the European Commission published the third report on energy prices and costs in Europe. Published every two years, this most recent report finds that wholesale energy prices have fallen in recent years due to increasing competition on wholesale markets from greater amounts of renewable energy, improved interconnections and a more integrated internal electricity market.

The COMBI project aimed at quantifying the multiple non-energy benefits of energy efficiency in the EU-28 area. It gathered existing approaches and evidence from the EU area and developed modelling approaches. The INSPIRE Geoportal makes it easier to discover, monitor and directly use geospatial data sets relevant for specific application areas, in particular European environmental policy. The new Geoportal provides overviews of the availability of INSPIRE data sets by country and thematic area, and makes the data available and ready-for-use in a range of applications.
The Geoportal is based on the metadata regularly harvested from the (currently 36) officially registered national data catalogues of EU Member States and EFTA countries.
