  This study, prepared for the Directorate-General for Energy (DG Energy) examines how low-cost energy efficiency measures can help low-income households. It also reviews the EU funding programmes available to fund schemes promoting these measures.

    Renewable energy i.e. solar, wind and biomass, and energy efficiency projects account for 40% of the investments made through the SME Instrument in the field of energy. Top three countries include Spain, Italy and the United Kingdom with most projects funded.   Energy-funded projects represent 14% of all projects under Horizon 2020 SME Instrument. Its 327 projects contribute to achieving the EU energy initiative goals.

The European Commission has awarded grants to 28 new environment, climate action and circular economy projects as part of its Horizon 2020 programme.   The new projects receive an EU contribution of about €119.4 million for research and innovation on circular economy, climate services, nature-based solutions, or raw materials. All in all, more than 345 organisations from 44 different countries, including 27 EU Member States, will be involved in the new projects.

A LIFE-line for 144 innovative projects investing for a better environment and climate action.     In November 2016, the European Commission has approved an investment package of €222.7 million from the EU budget to support Europe's transition to a more sustainable and low-carbon future. The EU funding will spur additional investments leading to a total of €398.6 million to be invested into 144 new projects in 23 Member States.
