On 19 May 2017, the smart cities of Bilbao, Vitoria, Valladolid, Mogel and San Sebastian will meet in Bilbao, Spain, to share their experiences with national and European stakeholders, and discuss how to make our cities more energy efficient and better places to live in.

Eight projects involving 27 districts belonging to 25 cities from 13 different countries have joined forces for greater leverage in sharing contents and promoting energy efficient renovation for cities and communities leading to large-scale replicability of sound energy efficiency solutions.

Sustainable renovation models for smarter cities
EU-GUGLE (European cities serving as Green Urban Gate towards Leadership in sustainable Energy), funded under the EU 7th Framework Programme for Research and Technological Innovation, aims to demonstrate the feasibility of nearly-zero energy building renovation models in view of triggering large-scale, Europe-wide replication in smart cities and communities by 2020.

On 27 April 2017, just one day before the Passive House Conference 2017, experts from at least three Smart City projects will hold a joint workshop in Vienna, Austria, to share results and experiences on smart and sustainable refurbishment solutions for apartment buildings, with a particular focus on social housing.

On Monday 12 December, the city of Aachen (Germany) welcomed representatives from other European cities for a study visit to the buildings refurbished within the EU-GUGLE project. The visit focused on issues related to social housing refurbishment and gave participants the opportunity to discover the innovative energy efficiency measures implemented in Aachen.

The start of 2015 has seen CITyFiED sign up to a group of fellow Smart City projects under the name MySmartCityDistrict (MSCD). Three other projects all aimed at moving us towards a sustainable urban future make up the group that was set up during the course of last year. These fellow projects are EU-GUGLE, R2CITIES, and ZenN.

Three projects involving 15 municipalities have decided to join forces for greater leverage in sharing and promoting energy efficient renovation solutions for cities and communities EU-wide. The projects EU-GUGLE, R2CITIES and ZenN, have now set out a roadmap for clustering a number of their activities to come. These include joint dissemination such as access to project workshops for members of the sister projects, web cross-linking, joint social media and events, exchange of best practices.
