The building has been nominated for the BREEAM Energy award 2020 and it is a very ambitious construction in the city centre of Warsaw. The location was originally occupied by a block of flats of 10 floors built in 1960, that was demolished in 2017, in order to enable the construction of the new complex, more in line with the new needs of the Warsaw’s office market.

As facility managers consider their reopening strategies, of course cleaning, PPE, and social distancing policies must be top of mind. But the role of the HVAC system cannot be ignored either. Can improved air filtration and better ventilation actually help reduce the spread of coronavirus? Or does recirculated air — as from air conditioning systems — help spread the virus? Those have been the million dollar questions really since the start of pandemic.

It seems that every week brings the release of a new smart device or system for buildings. Often, the benefit of the new technology is related to energy in order to reduce consumption, trim demand, or cut carbon emissions. Since HVAC and lighting systems are the biggest energy users in buildings, it’s no surprise that there is a wealth of smart technology promising gains in energy performance.

The purpose of HVAC systems is to provide and maintain environmental conditions, including proper airflow, relevant humidity, heating, and cooling in a specific area to ensure thermal comfort and indoor air quality. In the context of recent threats, special attention should be paid to the built environment. People usually spend their 90% time indoor; it is essential to understand the potential transmission dynamic of COID-19 within the building environments. The building's environment plays an important role in infection transmission.
