Located in the Cité universitaire de Paris, the Maison de l'Ile de France is the first eco-campus in the capital. The project is exemplary and implements a high energy performance strategy to meet ZEN objectives (Zero Energy, Zero Carbon, Zero Nuclear Waste) and thus anticipate the thermal regulations of 2020.

The construction of the Aulario for the School of Industrial Engineering of the University of Valladolid presents an extraordinary casuistry from several points of view: it recovers a well-known space of the traditional culture of the university, it has been projected as a building of almost null energy, and it recovers and improves the previous experience of the University of Valladolid in the realisation of sustainable building in all its aspects (cultural, economic, environmental, and social).

The ExcEED project (European Energy Efficient building district Database) is funded by the European Commission under the H2020 programme and aims at collecting data coming from new, modern and energy efficient buildings (such as energy performance, CO2 emissions, etc.).

In the recast Energy Performance of Buildings Directive (EPBD, 2010/31/EU), the term Nearly Zero-Energy Building (commonly abbreviated as NZEB) was introduced and defined as a “building that has a very high energy performance… the nearly zero or very low amount of energy required should be covered to a very significant extent by energy from renewable sources, including energy from renewable sources produced on-site or nearby
” (Art. 2).

IPEEC’s Buildings Energy Efficiency Task Group (BEET) has just released its seventh publication on energy efficiency in the buildings sector, BEET 7, which focuses on zero energy or emissions buildings (ZEBs). While the precise term varies, ZEBs generally refer to highly efficient buildings that use renewable technology to produce as much energy as they consume over the course of a year. The difficulty lies in the variety of metrics used to establish ‘zero’ energy or emissions, in addition to different energy consumption and production boundaries that make direct comparisons hard.

Buildings and settlements are nowadays increasingly expected to meet higher and potentially more complex levels of performance. They should be sustainable, use zero-net energy, be healthy and comfortable, grid-friendly, yet economical to build and maintain. Buildings are central to the EU‘s energy efficiency policy. Improving the energy performance of Europe‘s building stock is crucial, not only to achieve the EU‘s 2020 targets but also to meet the longer term objectives of the climate strategy as laid down in the low carbon economy roadmap 2050.

Heat Pumps in near Zero Emission Buildings (nZEB)
- in the new issue of the HPT Magazine!
Heat pumps is an excellent choice for low energy buildings! This is evidenced by the three projects (so called annexes) - within the Technology Collaboration Programme on Heat Pumping Technologies (HPT TCP) - that have been devoted to them, as well as the number of countries that have been participating in them. In the latest issue of HPT Magazine, we get an overview of the benefits of using heat pumps in low energy buildings.
