Soaring gas prices have been making headlines but for some households heating bills are nowhere near reaching record highs. These are the residents of Passivhaus homes. There are 1,500 Passivhaus buildings in the UK – and they have never been more popular. Each one is built – or retrofitted – to an internationally recognised “energy and comfort standard”, which typically involves very high levels of insulation, triple-glazed windows and an airtight, draught-free structure.

The watershed formed by the Oka and Golako rivers flows into Mundaka, where they form an extensive estuary flanked by beaches. The climate is humid and temperate with rainfall throughout the year, although less frequent in the summer months.

This year the final applause was shared in the chat window: the participants expressed their appreciation for the 24th International Passive House Conference, which was held asan online event for the first time on account of the COVID-19 pandemic. Over the past three weeks,more than 800 participants around the world tuned in and listened to the lectures on energy efficient construction and retrofit solutions from their own screens.
