1st Nordic Conference on Zero Emission and Plus Energy Buildings – Abstract Submission Open   The first Nordic Conference on Zero Emission and Plus Energy Buildings will be arranged in Trondheim, Norway, on Nov 6-7 2019. The conference will present state-of-the art research and practical solutions that pave the way towards a low carbon built environment, with a focus on Nordic countries. The abstract submission portal is now open, and we welcome contributions within the following topics.

District heating (DH) systems are key systems for the de-carbonization of heating energy in European Cities. In order to allow for this transition, while guaranteeing competitive energy costs, conversion of DHs is required. DH operation temperature needs to be reduced in order to increase the performance of renewable systems and operation criteria needs to be adopted for the introduction of weather-dependent, distributed heat sources such as solar systems.

One of the pilot buildings of the Solar Decathlon 2014 will now be rebuilt on the university campus Berlin Charlottenburg. The so-called “Rooftop” building, originally designed as a net energy plus residential building, will now be modified to be used as a seminar room and laboratory. Due to additional measurement technology, the students can learn about energy monitoring with a real building as example.

The project Next-Buildings (Next Zero Energy Buildings at lowest Cost by using Competitive Sustainable Technology), funded by the 7th Framework Programme of the European Union, is about the demonstration of very low energy buildings. In all demonstrations, the ambition is net zero carbon/energy or better (active or plus-energy house).

On 14 July 2017 a settlement of plus energy houses was inaugurated with a ceremonial key hand over to the building owners. All 13 houses (nine single-family houses and four double house halves) fulfil the efficiency house plus standard defined by the German Building Ministry. As such they generate more final and primary energy from renewable energy sources than they consume if balanced over a year. This includes also the household electricity use.

A settlement consisting of pre-fabricated houses in Wuppertal Germany is a living lab for future energy concepts of city quarters. The 19 modern and fully equipped exhibition houses are all efficiency plus houses (energy plus houses) according to the definition of the German Building Ministry, e.g. they generate more renewable energy than the total energy use of the houses if balanced over a year. Each house features an electrical heat pump, a photovoltaic (PV) field on the roof and partly the facades and electrical storages (batteries).

In Halle (Saale), a plus-energy school was built as a sustainable and ecological construction made with a timber frame and cellulose insulation in accordance with the Passive House standard. The building replaces the old existing site of the St. Franziskus-Elementary School in the surrounding area. The new school is a three-storey building with two interconnected structures: the after-school care and class area (west structure), as well as the administrative wing with the school canteen and caretaker's apartment (east structure).
