Heating and cooling accounts for almost half of global energy consumption. With most of this relying fossil fuels, however, it contributes heavily to greenhouse gas emissions and air pollution. In parts of the world lacking modern energy access, meanwhile, inefficient biomass use for cooking also harms people’s health, damages the environment and reduces social well-being.

2020 is a year with many firsts: a world-wide pandemic that threatens our society, but also countries stepping up their climate ambitions and the European Union announcing the Climate Neutral Cities mission as well as many opportunities for cities with the Green Deal Policy Framework.
The Celsius Initiative also has some firsts this year: co-creating the forerunner groups together with the Celsius Cities and the first virtual Summit – Celsius Summit 2020

Residential heating energy accounts for more than 30 percent of energy use in most countries of Europe and Central Asia, and even more than 40 percent in the Balkans. Previous construction and heating methods did not focus on saving energy and the environment.
As a result, a highly inefficient energy use intensifies the impact of escalating energy prices on low-income households.

Renewable energy technologies for heating and cooling are safe, clean, efficient and increasingly cost-competitive. In its vision 2050 prospective document, the European Technology and Innovation Platform on Renewable Heating and Cooling – RHC ETIP – envisions that 100% renewable energy-based heating and cooling (100% RHC) in Europe is possible by 2050.
