A large part of the stock of Italian educational buildings have undertaken energy retrofit interventions, thanks to European funds allocated by complex technical-administrative calls. In these projects, the suggested retrofit strategies are often selected based on the common best practices (considering average energy savings) but are not supported by proper energy investigations.

Implementation of energy efficiency measures in schools and kindergartens, besides leading to energy savings and reduction of environmental pollution, would also improve the conditions in which children spend much of their time. More so, it would also develop their awareness of the importance of energy efficiency and sustainable development, making them future leaders of the energy transition process, was the message conveyed at the 6th meeting of the Serbian Parliamentary Energy Policy Forum (PFEPS), held under the title Energy Transition for Serbia.

This set of publications, developed by BPIE and commissioned by Buildings 2030, takes an important step towards defining, measuring, quantifying and monetising the impact of indoor environmental quality in schools, hospitals and offices. The findings reveal a major business opportunity to invest in people-centric renovation of existing buildings.

The objective of this research is to identify a tool of analysis applicable to school buildings that, through simple input information, can make immediate assessment reduction of energy consumption for heating and associated reduction of CO2emission, as a result of improvements. The definition of a methodology of analysis allows to evaluate preliminarily the energy performance of the whole school building identifying the most problematic buildings and dividing into groups based on the construction and geometry.

Im Modellvorhaben „Niedrigenergiehaus im Bestand für Schulen“ der Deutschen Energie-Agentur (dena) wurden seit 2007 über 35 Schulen mit über 50 Gebäuden energetisch saniert. 20 Schulen wurden einer detaillierteren Analyse unterzogen: Was sind die Erfolgsfaktoren einer gelungenen Sanierung? Dabei lag der Fokus, über die eingesparte Energie hinaus, auf der Einschätzung derer, die das Schulgebäude täglich nutzen: Schüler, Lehrer, Schulleiter und technisch Verantwortliche. Auch die Architekten der Sanierungen wurden qualitativ und quantitativ befragt.
