 Das School of the Future-Projekt wurde im Jahr 2011 als Demonstrationsprojekt im 7. Forschungsrahmenprogramm der Europäischen Union gestartet. Der zugehörige Förderaufruf hatte als Schwerpunkt „Demonstration von Energieeffizienz durch die Sanierung von Gebäuden“. Dabei sollten ganzheitliche Sanierungsmaßnahmen an Gebäuden mit hohem Multiplikationspotential für weite Gebiete Europas geplant, durchgeführt und evaluiert werden. Der Heizenergieverbrauch für die Raumkonditionierung der Gebäude sollte um mindestens 75 % durch die Sanierung reduziert werden.

Die Gebhard-Müller-Schule in Biberach hat durch ein wissenschaftliches Intensivmonitoring und resultierende Anpassungen im Betrieb der Gebäudetechnik den Primärenergieverbrauch um 30% senken können. In einer zweiten Stufe wurde nun ein Langzeitmonitoring entwickelt und durchgeführt, um ohne wissenschaftliche Begleitung das Energieniveau langfristig zu halten. Dabei wurden die entscheidenden Kenngrößen für einen energieeffizienten Gebäudebetrieb identifiziert.
