Wind turbines impact on landscape. Some consideration after holidays.

Share this Post:

Last summer I spent my holidays in Gaal ,Austria and during my trips in the mountains in the area, I visited the Tauernwind wind park (1.900 m above sea level). That means 11 wind turbines on a ridgesurrounded by high peaks. In winter the area is also a ski resort. A discussion with my wife arose about the impact of the wind turbines on the landscape (I am also publishing here a picture I took during the trip to show the outline). According to my wife, they had an ugly impact on the landscape. Personally I consider them a landmark of our era, just as windmill were in the past. Aren’t we fascinated by old windmills in the countryside? I think that in the future people will look at our wind generator as we do with old windmills, the Eiffel Tower was not appreciated at the time it was built, but now it’s one of the most widely known tourist attraction in the world. Please make your comments on wind turbine impact on the landscape!

Initially, here we had mixed opinions on this (and other) comparable projects. Main reservations were that there would be problems with game (because of the strange sound). Especially they were thinking about deer and black grouse. To what I know it is clear now that game gets used to these installations very quickly. And regarding black grouse we do see fluctuations in populations, but the biologist I talk to are not sure what the reasons are for this. Now apparently a real problem arises from the owners of the land: not so much from the ones who own the land on which the mills are built (they get a fair lease), but the neighbours, who normally do not. So I would conclude for this and other installations, that basically acceptance is there.

Interesting discussion.........Actually I agree with your wife…. the landscape is quite horrible ….. the idea of a romantic walk in the nature, exploring  paths and tracks …. forgiving civilization and everyday life troubles, enjoying only to be part of the universe… is damaged… but I think is better this kind of ‘damage’ than an high level of pollution derived from traditional energy  sources…. maybe we should work on the design.. thinking about  new wind turbines more landscape friendly….

Come on researchers and designers of all Europe!!… we and our romantic idea of the natural landscape  are in your hands .. and creativity!!!!!

Very interesting topic

In my opinion every technologies have an environmental impact and the wind power is not an excepcion. Maybe there are people who prefer don´t see the turbines in the hills but... what energy technology have not an impact?

Maybe the effort we have to do it is to transmit that the impact of RES is clearly visible and located but it is not possible to say in the more common energy sources...

I really don't see what the fuss is all about with wind turbines! Although i do admit that the energy produced exploting the wind resource may be of lesser importance than that obtained using more traditional sources, I will have a wind turbine any time, much rather than a high chimney stack from a waste burning facility, to name but one! Cheers!
