The H2020 Penny Project - Psychological social & financial barriers to energy efficiency - applies a behavioural science approach to better understand individual behaviour in the domain of energy efficiency. In particular, the project seeks to advance the understanding of consumer decisions in relation to both the use of energy and the adoption of energy-efficient technologies.
Within the project, an interactive tool for providing benchmarks dealing with energy efficiency in buildings and user awareness and habits has been developed.
The tool is structured as a survey, and for each question the user can access to specific benchmarks and reference answers coming from a dataset including information on 4,584 households that the survey in four countries: Switzerland, The Netherlands, Italy and Germany.
The survey is structured in eight sections:
- Appliances: including the age of fridges, dishwashed and washing machine
- Lights: for identifying the type of lights and the number of installed devices
- Temperatures: set-points adopted during day-time and night-time
- Values: questions about the sensitivity of the users on sustainability issues
- Behaviour: identification of virtuous energy-saving behaviours
- Energy literacy: questions on the awareness about energy consumptions in usual habits
- Financial literacy: questions on the awareness about financial issues needed to take an energy-saving investment
- Risks: about the perception of the risk and innovative technologies
At the end of each section, the user can access to a dashboard where is possible to navigate within the results of the survey, analysing the outcomes for each country.
