CLEAR 2.0 is an award-winning project which has facilitated the journey for thousands of consumers demonstrating that, with adequate support, consumers are ready to invest in the energy transition.
ince September 2017, consumer organizations in 6 European countries have guided consumers through all the stages leading to the purchase of domestic renewable and efficient energy technologies. To facilitate the consumer journey, the project launched group purchases, which lowered the costs of the equipment and guaranteed a fair deal for consumers. “We were able to offer the 17 groups a product testing service, check the necessary contracts were in order, get a good price and provide an after-sales service – all factors which boosted citizen’s confidence,” says Giorgia Caroli, Programme Manager of CLEAR 2.0, a project funded under H2020 Energy Efficiency.
Overall, the project has led to 129 M€ investments and the installation of 29,000 renewable energy systems, like photovoltaic panels, batteries, pellet stoves and heat pumps for heating and cooling1. CLEAR 2.0’s research demonstrated that, while cost is an important concern among potential renewable energy prosumers, the lack of knowledge of specific renewable energy technologies or trust in the installations are also key. To overcome these barriers, CLEAR 2.0 laboratory tested the home-based renewables available on markets in all the beneficiary countries and published the results. Together with that information, the project also developed personalised decision-making tools enabling consumers to choose among different technologies or, for instance, find out how long it might take for a system to pay for itself or how much energy they could save. All these enabled potential prosumers to make informed choices and many went ahead and invested.
In June 2020, the project won the highly prestigious Engagement Award at the European Sustainable Energy Week.
