Heating in the spotlight of energy efficiency

- Heating industry able to deliver annual savings equivalent to the energy demand of the Netherlands and Ireland together -

Brussels, 27 November 2013 – EHI, the Association of the European Heating Industry, successfully held its High Level Conference “Heating in the spotlight: delivering energy efficiency” in Brussels. The event, hosted by the Representation of the State of Hessen to the European Union, brought together more than 100 high level decision-makers, industry leaders and stakeholders to a dialogue on how the heating sector can best contribute to reaching the EU energy goals and, in particular, on the best ways forward to unleash the yet untapped potential of efficient and affordable heating systems across Europe.

Opening up the debate, Ulrich Schmidt, EHI Chairman and Member of the Managing Board of Bosch Thermotechnik, noted: “As heating industry, we love energy efficiency. Every year, our industry invests more than half a billion Euro in Research & Development for energy efficiency. The largest opportunity for improving the energy efficiency of European buildings lays in the replacement of the vast majority of old and less efficient heating equipment with state-of-the-art heating systems. Replacing the heating system alone, will bring an energy efficiency gain of at least 20% compared to current levels. Such savings, close to 97 million tonnes of oil equivalent, are comparable to the entire annual energy demand of the Netherlands and Ireland together.”

Commissioner for Energy, Günther Oettinger, gave a keynote speech, followed by a questions and answers session. He emphasised: “The transformation of our EU energy system means a huge increase in energy efficiency - it is a big challenge if we want to meet our ambitions for 2050: primary energy demand should drop in the range of 16 to 20% by 2030, and more than 32% by 2050. The current positive trend of improving energy efficiency in space heating has to be reinforced. We need a pragmatic and flexible solution, to cover up to 100% of our buildings – a broader picture with more renewables, but also taking advantage of the gains from efficient and affordable fossil fuel solutions”.
