Germany’s Fraunhofer Institute for Solar Energy and a group of heat pump manufacturers have started a project to replace gas and oil in multi-family homes with propane heat pumps. This type of heat pump will include low-charge propane (R290) as the refrigerant.
In fact, propane has become a recognised refrigerant for the heat pump industry and is widely used in outdoors heat pumps.
Specifically, the project´s consortium will develop heat pumps for single-floor heating systems, indoor central heating systems, and high-performance outdoor heating pumps.
