The IPCC's Fifth Assessment Report (AR5), provides up to date knowledge of the current state of scientific, technical and socio-economic aspects of climate change. It consists of three Working Group (WG) Reports and a Synthesis Report. "Climate Change 2014: Mitigation of Climate Change" is the result of the work of IPCC's Working Group III and assesses options for mitigating climate change through limiting or preventing greenhouse gas emissions and enhancing activities that remove them from the atmosphere.

Since the world’s buildings account for a large share of the global final energy use and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions they have a key role to effectively address climate change. Complimentary, under a scenario with aggressive adoption of energy-efficiency measures, cost-effective energy efficiency could substantially cut projected baseline growth in carbon emissions from energy use in buildings.
