By addressing all aspects simultaneously, ESP-r allows the designer to explore the complex relationships between a building's form, fabric, air flow, plant and control. ESP-r is based on a finite volume, conservation approach in which a problem (specified in terms of geometry, construction, operation, leakage distribution, etc.) is transformed into a set of conservation equations (for energy, mass, momentum, etc.) which are then integrated at successive time-steps in response to climate, occupant and control system influences.

The first market approach is called 'Quality Declaration'. The declaration provides a checklist of quality criteria for outstanding boiler installations. It will be issued by installers and should form part of contracts with end consumers. The second approach is referred to as 'Performance Guarantee'. It centres on guarantees of high seasonal efficiencies and energy savings of new heating systems.

Web suite of building energy simulators that model energy, comfort, and daylighting performance, and give estimates of the long-term cost of utilities. The simulations restrict flexibility in order to offer users greater ease-of-use and speed. The tool can be quickly mastered by non-technical designers, and runs fast enough to allow them the scope to experiment with many different versions of a design during a single sitting.
