Coronavirus economic stimulus packages need to consider all facets of sustainable development, otherwise we risk creating even greater disasters for ourselves in the future.
Energy efficiency must be an integral part of any economic recovery efforts. Doing so will create jobs, reduce energy bills, stimulate SMEs, support electrification and reduce GHG emissions.

Energy-efficient buildings have the potential to play a key role in EU energy transition. In the United States, several energy utilities have recently piloted and launched buildings Pay-for-Performance (P4P) programmes making use of possibilities offered by energy metering technologies that provide greater certainty over energy savings and drive improved performance.

The renewable energy sector added 176 gigawatts (GW) of generating capacity globally in 2019, marginally lower than the (revised) 179 GW added in 2018. However, new renewable power accounted for 72 per cent of all power expansion last year, according to new data released by the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA).

The Passive House standard, as promoted by the Passive House Institute (PHI) achieves highly energy efficient buildings whose demand for heating and cooling energy can be reduced by as much as 90% compared to conventional builds. This is achieved using an envelope-first approach and considers the five principles of Passive House: airtightness, high-quality windows, climate-applicable insulation, avoidance of thermal bridges and sufficient ventilation.

This extension to a School of Design & Environment building at the National University of Singapore is an outstanding example of a net zero-energy building (NZEB) in the tropics. The five-storey building is home to labs, design studios and workshops used by the departments of architecture and design. Construction of the building was optimised to facilitate lateral ventilation and comfortable natural light. An integral aspect of net zero-energy consumption is that conventional approaches to air conditioning have to be challenged.
