This report, by the ABRACADABRA H2020 project, presents the attractiveness of a new renovation strategy based on volumetric Add-ons and Renewable Energy Sources (AdoRES) intended as one (or a set of) Assistant Building unit(s) - like aside or façade additions, rooftop extensions or even an entire new building construction - that “adopt” the existing buildings (the Assisted Buildings) to achieve nearly zero energy standards.

Lighthouse project Remourban will be opening its doors this month with its first study tour taking place in the lighthouse city Nottingham, UK.   Behind the tour are the project partners Nottingham City Council and Nottingham Trent University. The tour has been organised in cooperation with the Action Cluster on Integrated Planning of the European Innovation Partnership on Smart Cities and Communities and the Smart Cities Information System.

The street lighting project was originally planned in the municipality of Berg. After Berg and the neighbouring municipality of Rohrbach were amalgamated, the renovation project covered the whole street lighting of the former municipality of Berg and a part of Rohrbach. As a result, more lighting points were renovated than initially planned and agreed upon by the municipality and ESCO (139 instead of 121). The municipality’s main aim was to save electricity and use more efficient lighting technology.

With a population slightly below 1,000 inhabitants, the municipality of Cabanillas decided to evaluate an energy efficiency project with its streetlighting. The main objective was the improvement of the physical state and energy efficiency of the streetlight system as well as maintaining or increasing the quality of the service. The municipality was interested in conducting this project with an EPC and an open public tender was published for ESCOs to submit their offers.

The street lighting infrastructure in Kilkenny County was established during the past 60-70 years. The area selected for this project was a representative sample of the 9,800 lamps throughout the county. Street lighting represents approximately 55% of the municipality’s electricity consumption. The light quality was variable and unsatisfactory. The cost of the upgrades was traditionally the barrier to change.
