With its Efficiency House Plus initiative, the Federal Ministry of the Interior, Building and Community is giving new impulses to research and development in the field of energy-efficient building. At the same time, the principles of economy, technological freedom, simplification and the voluntary aspect of measures continue to apply. Furthermore, the Efficiency House Plus building standard allows a high level of design freedom. This brochure provides information on the results achieved so far.

They also wanted the building to be a demonstration project that would set a new standard for developers, architects, engineers and contractors.

The Lycée pour Professions de Santé in Ettelbruck, now the largest wooden building in the Grand Duchy, is a pilot project. It is indeed the first Luxembourg public building with positive energy. It is also the first in Luxembourg to aim for a "Minergie-P- ECO" certification. In addition to the comfort of the occupants, which reaches its highest level thanks to this certification, it is also the ecological footprint of the building that has been at the centre of attention since the design phase.

When the new grammar school building was erected in Diedorf, an ‘integrated design process’ was applied, demonstrating that it is possible to plan innovatively and sustainably and still ensure that available resources are used economically and sparingly throughout the entire life cycle of a building.

In 2011, a detached house built in Mühltal outside Darmstadt in the 1970s became the first of its kind to be restored and converted into an ‘surplus energy’ house complete with electric vehicle technology.  Following the redevelopment, the building generates more energy than it requires. But this was not achieved by cramming the house full of new technology. It adheres to the highest interior standards and has a classic, timeless feel about it.

Built in 2019, the Eisbärhaus was designed as a passive building comprising two units. Building materials were selected according to guidelines provided by the Austrian environmental association Umweltverband Vorarlberger Gemeindehaus. All exterior walls consist of wooden timbers treated with cellulose to provide thermal insulation (layer thickness: 42cm).
