Data is fundamental to understand how much a building consumes, how much it is efficient and whether thermal comfort is adequate. However, how should this data be evaluated? Is it still possible to increase energy efficiency of buildings? A solution would be to make a comparison with similar contexts: for example, how much does a building consume on average under specific climatic conditions? How much energy can it obtain from its installed renewable energy sources?

Important information – OB-20 & Annex 79 to be held online   The IEA Secretariat have given notice that all face-to-face meetings before June are to be changed to an online format, due to the perceived risks of coronavirus. The University of Southampton plan to host the virtual events on the dates and times currently scheduled, and hope to allow these to take place no differently than if they were in-person (with plenaries, break-out sessions, etc.).

The university city of Freiburg is home to an innovative city hall that is now the biggest surplus-energy building in Europe. The building boasts outstanding thermal insulation that allows for low-temperature heating and high-temperature cooling. To minimise energy demand, the building is fitted with a ventilation system that uses heat recovery. The building is heated and cooled efficiently by using energy in the ground water.

The EU project "RenoBooster", under the lead of the City of Vienna, aims at developing new advisory and funding services for house refurbishments in Vienna.   A "One-Stop-Shop" - as it is supposed to exist in all member states according to the new EU building directive - should bundle the offers and thus simplify, accelerate and improve renovations. Vienna is therefore one of the first European cities and regions to develop such a service.

Vision & mission   Municipalities and local authorities play a key role in a sustainable European energy transition. They have a tremendous potential to build comprehensive sustainable energy investment programs (i.e. investments in energy efficiency and renewable energy). They also play a key role in pooling smaller projects into larger investment portfolios and in mobilising the significant financial resources required for the energy transition.
