Only a drastic reduction in global energy demand will allow an affordable manageable transition to a global energy system based on renewables and ambitious energy efficiency measures are key to meet sustainability goals. Global growth in energy use is largely outpacing decarbonisation and in 2018, primary energy intensity – an important indicator of how much energy is used by the global economy – improved by just 1.2%, the slowest rate since 2010.

Today there is an urgent need to scale up progress towards energy efficiency in buildings. Energy efficiency is also one of the pillars of a climate mitigation strategy and a critical element to meeting the Global Sustainable Development Goals. It is acknowledged how energy consumption in buildings is an important contributor to global emissions of greenhouse gases and harmful pollutants. Indeed, in 2017 buildings and appliances accounted for around 30% of global final energy use.

The Aktiv-Stadthaus in Frankfurt am Main is the first large apartment building in a city to be built according to the Efficiency House Plus standard. The first residents moved in during the summer of 2015. The aim of its innovative energy concept is to generate more renewable energy over the space of a year than is used by the building itself.

This house is located in Schnersheim, a village of 750 inhabitants, 20 km away of the head of the Alsace Region, Strasbourg. The house is a former farm and is constructed on a light slope. The basement and two walls giving to the national road are in rubbles of sandstone and limestone. The storeys are timber-framed, filled with cob or hand-made bricks produced on site. It has a heated area of 350 m² on two storeys. The basement and the attic are not heated.

ICLEI Members Helsinki (Finland), Copenhagen (Denmark), and Stavanger (Norway), together with Amsterdam, Paris Region, and Tallinn have joined forces through the AI4Cities project, a new EU-funded project challenging companies to develop artificial intelligence (AI) solutions in the fields of energy and mobility. These solutions are aimed at reducing cities’ greenhouse gas emissions and supporting them in meeting their climate change commitments. ICLEI Europe is an expert project partner.
