The construction sector is essential for an economic recovery after the COVID-19 crisis. It can rapidly create large amounts of jobs and involves far-reaching value chains of small and large businesses. In 2015, the sector accounted for 11-13% of global GDP. It is indeed a major employer: 7% of total global employment or 220 million jobs depend on it. Globally, USD 4.5 trillion were spent on construction and renovation of buildings in 2018.

The entire residential complex is planned to be barrier-free. It is the new construction of a residential complex as passive house construction with 12 barrier-free or adaptable apartments, 4 of which are intended as serviceable apartments. There are also 13 underground parking spaces and 5 outdoor parking spaces.

The 10 houses of Hem are the first homes rehabilitated in France to zero energy and any form of consumption guaranteed for 25 years. Energiesprong is an initiative initiated in the Netherlands in 2013. Vilogia tested in France the first prototypes of this approach on 10 houses built in 1950 in Hem near Lille. Vilogia aims to rehabilitate 500 homes over 5 years using the same method. The Energiesprong method is as follows: using the current technological tools (digital and industrial method) to rehabilitate a dwelling in 3 weeks.

The European Union is facing a great challenge: how to quickly re-build Europe’s economy in the context of COVID-19 while ensuring to keep itself on the path to become climate neutral by 2050.   Against this background, investing in decarbonising buildings is key to reconcile climate objectives and economic recovery, in a virtuous way. Indeed, the renovation wave is one of the key pillars of the European Green Deal, which should be at the core of the post-COVID-19 recovery plan.
