Energy Performance Certificates (EPCs) are dependent on the behaviour of glazing which is determined using a well defined set of data characterizing its thermal performance: on the one hand the data for the transparent system (glass and frame), on the other hand the data for the shading devices. The set of data itself, its availability and its quality is a main concern from the point of view of QUALICHECK project. The Webinar on Solar Control will review some aspects directly related to this topic.

Solar Control and related QUALICHeCK concerns for Spain; building technical code and certification: In a first presentation, the data required for the EPC Calculation in the frame of the Spanish Building Technical Code will be reviewed with the target of quantifying the relevance of glazing which would be expected to be very high as the climate conditions in Spain are extreme in both, summer and winter conditions. The availability of data required for the characterisation of glazing in Spain is relaying on manufacturers which should publish the global properties, mainly the solar factor and the thermal transmittance. In what concerns the shading characterization, the data set is much less defined than that of the rest of the glazing, as it depends not only on physics phenomena, but also on the operation of the shading devices.
Database on shading performance properties prepared under the direction of ES-SO: The EPBD has become a trigger for the industry to further promote the shading performance properties and innovation in materials and solutions. However, when it comes to the building regulation compliance in the different countries, shading is often inadequately considered. With the involvement in the EU QUALICHeCK project dealing with compliance and quality regarding EPB legislation, ES-SO did an investigation among the EU countries on how actual shading data were presented. This has lead to the ES-SDA database, the European solar shading database.
Quality of shading in practice: Reliable validated data of shading performances presented by the manufacturers is the first important step to provide quality of the building project. However, a good understanding of the product application and quality of the installation are equally important. As shading is mainly a tailor made solution training to understand the different solutions and how they should be operating should be provided in the training of professionals. ES-SO will be gradually building up a training framework for the different type of professionals involved with shading.
