Delivering services to buildings based on an Active building Energy Performance Contracting (AEPC) model provides a new opportunity to Energy Service Companies (ESCOs and grid operators) aiming to generate new business or improve existing ones, while lowering GHG emissions.   ESCOs can play an important role as aggregators of implicit Demand Response in buildings, as electrification (in combination with active control) based on demand response to variable pricing seems to be the key to a successful business case.

Concept:   Smart energy management is currently one of the most important research areas in Europe. With this in mind, the EU-funded SINERGY project aims to unlock the innovation potential of the Institute Mihajlo Pupin (IMP) in Serbia.   It will therefore strive to strengthen the IMP’s current research capacity and enhance its research competitiveness so as to make it a regional point of reference in smart energy management technologies.

Concept:   Adequate warmth, cooling and lighting and the energy to power appliances are essential in a home.   Energy poverty is associated with a range of adverse consequences for people’s health and well-being, exacerbated by low temperatures and stress associated with unaffordable energy bills.

Concept:   Regional and local authorities need to precisely determine, control and demonstrate their sustainable energy and climate actions to increase their efficiency.   The EU-funded ENERGee Watch project will support peer-to-peer learning for municipal and regional associations and networks to understand how different sustainable energy and climate mitigation actions have been controlled and assessed.

Concept:   TThe EU-funded LEAP4SME project aims to support member states and specifically their small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in carrying out energy audits and implementing cost-effective energy-saving measures.   To reach those objectives, LEAP4SME will conduct a mapping of policies and programmes that currently exist to identify their strengths and weaknesses.

Concept and objectives:   Buildings account for around 40% of total energy use and 36% of CO2 emissions in Europe .   According to the recast Directive on the energy performance of buildings (EPBD) all new buildings after 2020 should reach nearly zero energy levels, meaning that they should demonstrate very low energy needs mainly covered by renewable energy sources.

Concept:   Europe is experiencing an increasing number of disasters due to severe and extreme weather and climate events.   The more vulnerable a community is to such natural hazards, the greater the risk of human and material losses.
