The H2020 project CRAVEzero aims to increase the viability of nearly Zero-Energy Buildings (nZEB) through solutions and tools for supporting the cost reduction during the whole life cycle of the buildings. In particular, one of the backbones of the project is the CRAVEzero pinboard, a structured platform that includes all the tools and supporting materials elaborated within the project.

The heating and cooling sector is of crucial importance for the implementation of Germany's climate protection goals. Heating and cooling is responsible for half of the total energy consumption in Europe. However, since fossil fuels, in particular natural gas, cover the majority (85%) of this demand, the transition to low CO2 heat sources such as geothermal, biomass, solar and waste heat must be created.

As a major component of the Paris-Saclay energy strategy, the heating and cooling network of the Urban Campus is an ambitious project mobilizing local renewable energies and integrated into a vast intelligent multi-energy network. Since 2019, the infrastructure has been selected as a European demonstrator of 5th generation networks as part of the European D2Grids project. In line with the challenges of the energy transition and its innovation approach, BRGM has set up an experimental platform that is unique in France, dedicated to research and development of surface geothermal exchangers. This project is part of the process of setting up a European energy efficiency cluster in the Centre-Val de Loire region. It is co-financed by the Centre-Val de Loire Region and the ERDF (European Regional Development Fund).

A startup company is beginning to market geothermal systems that circulate heat from shallow aquifers.   A heat exchange technology developed at the University of Minnesota could help shrink the cost and footprint of geothermal heating and cooling systems.   Unlike conventional geothermal, which circulates ground heat found far below the surface, the approach taps into aquifers using fewer, shallower wells.

Part of the Hornmeer district in Aalsmeer is the scene of a unique energy exchange project. Three buildings in the district are now using residual heat from the nearby data centre of NorthC and are therefore completely independent of natural gas. In exchange for the residual heat, the data centre receives cold, allowing it to save on electricity for cooling. In short, a unique energy exchange project.

The idea is that by cooperating with demand response aggregators, ESCOs can access both energy efficiency savings and revenues from offering the site’s flexibility to the grid, thus enabling faster repayment of the initial investments. An Enhanced Energy Performance Contract (EPC) will guarantee building owners a minimum level of energy savings and occupant comfort whilst ensuring that a maximum value can be extracted from the flexibility potential of on-site energy assets.
