The European Green Deal sets out the ambition to achieve net zero carbon emissions by 2050, in particular through a ‘renovation wave’. Energy Efficiency Services will play a key role in delivering this by offering turnkey packages of expertise, resources and financing to unlock opportunities that may otherwise remain untapped. A 2019 update to a survey conducted biennially by the QualitEE project, revealed that the lack of trust and information remain significant barriers to uptake of such services.

Interoperability in the construction sector is a key issue and researchers, developers and designers have tackled since the introduction of CAD systems. Traditionally, engineers, architects and site operators interact and track their information exchange through paper or digitalized drawings and e-mails. With the introduction of Building Information Modelling (BIM) techniques and tools, operators are using new solutions and methods to keep track and exploit these data.

The EU, in light of the 2030 and 2050 energy and climate goals, has adopted an ambitious vision for the energy performance of its buildings among other measures. This is because the building sector still represents about 40% of energy consumption in the EU with the largest cost-effective savings potential. However, in order to meet this vision, the construction sector must be ready to deliver high-performance retrofits and nearly zero energy buildings. As in every field, this would require a number of qualified professionals and building workers.

The EU’s 2030 Framework for climate and energy sets a 40% cut in greenhouse gas emissions compared to 1990, and at least a 32% share of renewable energy consumption, as EU-wide targets for 2030. For the power system, reducing greenhouse gas emissions implies greater electrification, i.e. a greater share of electricity in the total energy mix.
