By the end of 2015, a series of free postgraduate level training courses in Nearly Zero Energy Buildings (NZEB) will begin around Europe. These ‘Professional Energy Skills in NZEB’ courses aim to empower building professionals through the development of skills in energy efficiency and integration of renewables in the retrofit of existing housing stock.   The program is for EU engineers, architects and building manager professionals who are interested in energy efficiency applied to buildings.

15 Climate Stars given to cities and regions in 7 countries   On 6 October 2016, in Lower Austria’s Grafenegg Castle, 15 municipalities, regions and associations of local authorities from seven European countries were awarded with a Climate Star for their outstanding climate action initiatives. The local projects cover a wide range of topics, from energy and mobility to food systems and sustainable procurement up to climate justice and climate change adaptation.

A recent analysis from BPIE on the vulnerability to gas supply disruptions concludes that Central and South East European (SEE) countries are facing a strategic choice.   International developments over the past few years have intensified the energy challenges facing Central and Southern European countries. The interruption of Russian gas supply via Ukraine, volatile global oil prices and divergent interests of State actors have renewed Europe’s concerns about its energy dependency.

An analysis of the vulnerability to gas supply disruptions concludes that Central and South East European (SEE) countries are facing a strategic choice. The latest BPIE report finds that Slovakia and Hungary face a severe risk, and Bulgaria a substantial risk to be unable to heat the national building stocks. The report presents a new Building Vulnerability Indicator and offers an alternative solution to mitigating supply risks through building renovation.

This workshop, held in the framework of the European Union Sustainable Energy Week (EUSEW 2016), will try to raise awareness on the refurbishment of buildings towards nearly-zero energy buildings (nZEB). It will take into account the rationale, legal obligations and national goals, available technologies, calculation methodologies for cost-optimality and benefits for the target groups.

The Regional Energy Efficiency Programme (REEP) provides a combination of financing instruments, technical assistance and policy support to Western Balkans countries that help create a sustainable market for energy efficiency. The countries targeted are Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, FYR of Macedonia, Kosovo, Montenegro and Serbia.

WeBSEFF - the Western Balkans Sustainable Financing Facility is part of the EBRD's Sustainable Energy Financing Facility (SEFF) family. It provides credit lines to partner banks in the Western Balkans to on-lend to businesses and municipalities wanting to invest in energy efficiency and small-scale renewable energy projects.

Investor Confidence Project (ICP) Europe is developing a suite of building energy renovation roadmaps - Energy Performance Protocols - that aim to reduce transaction costs by assembling existing standards and practices into a consistent and transparent process. These tools then enable a marketplace for building owners, project developers, utilities, public programmes and investors to trade in standardised energy efficiency projects.
