Using 3D modelling software, layering it with data, and working very closely with all partners in construction and engineering projects is critical if European companies are to survive in the challenging and rapidly changing market.   Building information modelling (BIM) is a digital information management approach. It means a more efficient use of resources, more effective communications and therefore collaboration within the partnership, greater flexibility and improved long-term planning.

No one knows what the future exactly holds. Nevertheless, we look at trends and examine new developments today to define business strategies and to develop policies and regulations for tomorrow. In this report we present a forward-look on the European built environment in 2050.   It applies to the entire built environment: residential, commercial, public and industrial buildings.

More than 10 scenarios were modelled by the organisations who supported the model testing, while other scenarios were elaborated by the project team to explore the net-zero opportunities and trade-offs.   Out of these scenarios, three typical pathways were selected to illustrate the conclusions of this report.   All three reach net-zero emissions by 2050.

  As the world increasingly benefits from the price revolution in renewable energy and the world’s largest investors come to grips with the phase-down of fossil fuels, it has become clearer that we have the technology and the finance necessary to realise the Paris Climate Agreement.    Despite this opportunity, we are not acting with the urgency that the global climate emergency requires.

It is important to remind ourselves that as one of Europe’s largest economic sectors (almost 10% GDP) the construction is a very divers industry that includes a huge number of small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs).   These SMEs will be instrumental in achieving the EU’s circular economy and carbon neutrality objectives. They need clear support to participate and strive in the sustainable built environment.
