In the last decade, energy efficiency (EE) has been considered as one of the major tools for addressing climate change, as it allows to reduce energy consumption (depending mainly from imported fossil fuels) and, therefore, also greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. For this precise reason, and given the growing environmental concern among society, EE has been integrated first in the EU 2020 goals and hereafter in the EU 2030 goals, both defining specific targets in terms of CO2 emissions, renewable energy use in power generation, and EE.

The plan confirms that improving energy efficiency by renovating buildings and clean transport is the bedrock of climate action.
A decreased energy demand will enable further emission reductions and keep energy costs low. This will help vulnerable households, improve living conditions and create local jobs.

SUSTAINABLE HEATING STRATEGIES & GUIDANCE FOR THE HEATING TRANSITION
Across the EU energy demand for heating is largely met through fossil fuels and accounts for around one third of the EUs carbon emissions. This needs to change and SHIFFT is working to address this urgent and complex dimension of the zero-carbon transition.

There are many suggestions and various policies and actions to combat climate change and achieve decarbonization but how do we know which ones will be most beneficial?
For example, what will have the greater impact on emissions: increasing public transportation use or adapting the diet? How much will emissions reduce if we phase out coal by 2025? What impact will increasing heating and cooling efficiency have on total emissions?
