Digitalisation is the innovative use of information and communications technologies, in particular the large-scale rollout of smart devices and sensors, and the use of big data collection and analysis. In the context of meeting the energy savings targets of the European Union and improving the energy efficiency of its buildings, this Joint Research Centre Technical Report looks at the technologies, opportunities and challenges presented by digitalisation for heating and cooling.

The objective of the project is to provide communities with the technology and support to help reduce energy consumption in their homes and to investigate ways in which communities can work towards more sustainable life styles. It is an ongoing three year project with pilot studies in Brussels (Belgium), Amsterdam (Netherlands) and Bergen (Norway).

The HEART toolkit incorporates different components and technologies, which cooperate to transform an existing building into a smart building.
In developing this toolkit, the project advances and improves energy efficiency and the use of renewable energies in buildings across Europe. Particularly in Central and Southern Europe where climate change is leading to increased electricity consumption both during summer and winter seasons.

The successful story of the first EU funded CLEAR project (IEE 13-588) – enabling Consumers to Learn about, Engage with and Adopt Renewable energy technologies - continued from September 2017 with Clear 2.0. It actively guides consumers through all the stages leading to the purchase of domestic renewable and low-carbon energy technologies. It has the objective to enable consumers to become more aware, active players, to save money and to easily become “prosumers”.

In 2017, energy consumption in the European Union (EU) continued to increase for the third consecutive year, thus moving away from the energy efficiency targets. Primary energy consumption amounted to 1,561 million tonnes of oil equivalent (Mtoe), while final energy consumption reached 1,222 Mtoe. Compared with last year, both levels increased by around 1%.
