Even though rejected heat from a number of industrial processes is called waste heat it often contains large amount of exergy and could be efficiently reused through one of the many waste heat recovery technologies. This simple web-calculator may be applied to analyse four most common waste heat recovery technologies from both technical and economic perspective. Any calculator user can use one’s own data on waste heat source, choses one’s own application of four considered technologies, checks its adequacy and predicts basic techno-economic parameters.

Our 2021 Spring Edition of the FEDARENE Info is out!   This season, we focus on District Heating and Cooling – a sector that could become one of the most important contributors to the EU Green Deal and Energy Transition. Heating and cooling drives half of the energy consumption in Europe. However, more than two thirds of demand is met with fossil fuels. Changing the conventional fossil paradigm in heating and cooling is essential for reaching the EU decarbonisation goals.

But the cost of implementing deep energy upgrades that might cost 45-60,000 Euro per home has long been a non-starter whether you’re an individual homeowner at one end of the scale… or manage thousands of rental units at the other. At either end of the spectrum, the potential long-term energy savings are often trumped by the up-front costs.

The LowUP (LOW valued energy sources UPgrading for buildings and industry uses) project received funding from the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme under grant agreement n°723930. During the project, the partners worked to develop and demonstrate three new efficient heating and cooling technologies that will significantly reduce both CO2 emissions and primary energy consumption.

Concept:   The renewable transformation of heating and cooling is underway but requires innovative next-generation policies. Currently, renewables are estimated to serve just 10 % of the thermal energy demand.   The implementation of district heating and cooling (DHC) systems based on renewable energy sources (RES) is a solution that is spreading, particularly among small communities in search of energy independence.

Concept and objectives:   In engineered wood products (EWPs), adhesives play an essential role particularly by helping save wood, making the structure light and robust, and moderating the expansion and contraction due to the inherent moisture.   Although there are many advantages associated with EWPs, the use of adhesives causes some concerns about their sustainability, recyclability, and broader environmental impact.
