Regarding the SBA Core metrics, they are the result of different calculation processes coupling different types of information. Among others, the information required to perform such calculations (Quantity Take Off, gross area, total numbers of building components) already exist, in most cases, in BIM. Therefore, there is an obvious need in trying to link Sustainable tools with BIM. On the other side of the process, after having performed a sustainable analysis, there is also a need to store the result in the BIM in order to share them with other stakeholders.

Currently the SBA Common Metrics include the following indicators: • Global Warming Potential (GWP) • Use of non-renewable primary energy • Water consumption • Solid wastes production • Indoor environment quality (IEQ): − Thermal comfort − Indoor air CO2 concentration − Formaldehyde concentration This framework needed to be pilot-tested within assessment systems and in real projects in order to allow the analysis of the feasibility of the indicators, as well as their applicability and comparability, which will finally allow identifying potential improvements to be made and...

Officially launched in 2009 the SB Alliance is gathering international research institutes, certification bodies and other players of the building industry. The research aims at answering the need of the real estate industry for the harmonization of environmental performance metrics. Indeed the existing methods of sustainable building assessment are now widely used but they all have their own criteria, which make them difficult to compare.
