New fuel cell units generate heat energy and electrical energy with an efficiency of over 90 percent running on natural gas, and on hydrogen and methane produced using renewable energy. With the help of extensive tests in single and two-family homes their operation and design could be improved incrementally. Sonnenhäuser weisen einen Primärenergiebedarf von maximal 15 kWh/m²a für Heizung und Hilfsenergie. In den gut gedämmten Gebäuden deckt eine Solaranlage typischerweise zwischen 60 und 70 % des Wärmebedarfs. Der Rest wird meist über eine Biomasseheizung abgedeckt. Der geringe Primärenergiebedarf ist bei den Sonnenhäusers (auch SolarAktiv-Häuser genannt) mit Mehrkosten für die Gebäudehülle und Anlagentechnik verbunden. Ein neue Tool, das am Fraunhofer-Institut für Solare Energiesysteme (ISE) entwickelt wurde ermöglich nun die Berechnung der erforderlichen Mehrkosten.
