SSPCR 2019 specifically wants to support the ‘transposition’ of research into practice and visionary approaches into (planning) policies and tools, to be applied by local authorities and decision-makers in an urban and regional context. SSPCR 2019 explores the impact of academic research, the scaling-up and replicability opportunities of pilot projects, and the added value of local bottom-up initiatives, in relation to complex challenges posed by the smart city/region approach.

Reducing energy consumption has a direct positive impact in the form of reduced energy bills, however, when selling the asset, at the moment, there is no evidence that buyers would recognise this value. In-depth research shows that although buildings with A or B energy labels are valued higher in some markets, it is not related to the energy performance of the building but rather an indicator of buyer preference for modern and comfortable buildings.

ENERFUND is a tool that rates and scores deep renovation opportunities. The tool is based on a set of parameters such as the Energy Performance Certificates (EPCs) rating, year of construction of the building, cost of retrofitting in the said area, and others. During this workshop, the step by step process of how a user can filter and select buildings within the ENERFUND database will be shown.

An increased energy performance of buildings not only reduces energy costs and CO2 emissions, but creates jobs, increases the comfort and health of its occupants and brings environmental benefits in terms of improved air quality. Valuing these multiple benefits is key to making investment decision more viable and thus accelerating building renovation.
