Building policies are increasingly demanding in terms of energy performance and reduction of CO2 emissions. At the same time, people spending 60-90% of their life in indoor environments (homes, offices, schools, etc.), indoor air quality is essential in ensuring health, quality of life and performance of buildings’ occupants.

We are living very strange times which demand us to stay indoors even more than usual (80% > 95% > 100%) and for some of us a great deal more (50% > 95% > 100%). This experience is enabling a more salient observation of our indoor environment which otherwise often goes unnoticed as we humans adapt, especially when distracted by our preoccupations, whatever they may be. One of the major lessons learnt by the six local authorities from five different countries, Maastricht University and the environmental charity Changeworks, all involved in the ACE-Retrofitting project: They underestimated the slowness of the decision-making process in condominiums and how long it takes for retrofits to take place (3-5 years).

The COVID-19 pandemic is taking a dire health and economic toll across the United States – including on people in the energy efficiency sector. In these stressful, uncertain times, we at ACEEE are doing whatever we can to understand and help address the challenges ahead. Already, it is becoming apparent that the pandemic is affecting the efficiency sector, especially its more than 2.4 million workers, as well as energy use and emissions in profound ways.

Due to the current situation, please check the latest status of the event at the organisers’ webpage.   The INTERREG ECCO Project is hosting two events on June 24th to tackle this question with the aim of encouraging local and regional politicians to support community energy initiatives by showcasing the strength, growth, and benefits in North-West Europe.
