Innovative facade concepts are today more relevant than ever. The demand for natural ventilation in commercial buildings is increasing due to growing environmental consciousness while at the same time energy consumption for buildings has to be reduced. An advanced facade should allow for a comfortable indoor climate, sound protection and good lighting, thus minimising the demand for auxiliary energy input. Double skin facades (DSF) have become a major architectural element in office buildings over the last 15 years.

The Business Center Lower Austria has been built in 2007 and has a gross floor area of approximately 7000 m². The heating and cooling demand are 66.5 respectively 90% lower than the Lower Austrian Building code. The heating demand is 4.57 kWh/m³y and the cooling demand is 0.1 kWh/m³y. The projects, which were competitively selected through the State Energy Program, represent the program's second round of funding that will total $74 million. Additional awards are expected to be made before the end of the year. Measures funded include installation of lighting and lighting controls, heating, cooling and controls, building envelope, photovoltaic systems, high efficiency biomass boilers, solar thermal, small wind generators and alternative-fuel refueling stations and vehicles.
