The “Entwerfen von Krankenhäusern und Bauten des Gesundheitswesens” department at the Technische Universität Berlin will be carrying out this project, which is part of the “Energy-Optimised Construction” (EnOB) focal area in the German federal government’s fifth energy research programme. The goal is to develop buildings which have minimal primary energy requirements and high occupant comfort, all combined with moderate investment costs and significantly reduced operating costs.

The European Concrete Platform working together with the Architects Council of Europe believed it valuable to gather together these terms and establish a ‘working’ glossary of the concepts currently in use in a concise, easily accessible form. This can then be used to disseminate information about sustainable construction more widely

Brussels, 24 March 2010 – ‘Achieving intelligent energy in cities by speaking the same language’ was the theme of the event jointly organised today by the Architects Council of Europe and the European Concrete Platform.  The two organisations also launched the results of the ‘Common Language’ project. “There is a need for a holistic approach to sustainable construction and we have thus aimed to show leadership in this field” stated Selma Harrington, President of ACE.

The EU wishes to better tap the possibilities and potentials of energy services in the future and has therefore brought to life the European Energy Service Initiative in 2009. Considering the depletion of non-renewable resources and global climate change, new solutions for energy supply become increasingly important. Energy service companies (ESCOs) in Europe are already showing that energy efficiency and profitability do not contravene. Innovative Energy Performance Contracts can reduce energy consumption of buildings by 25 percent and more.
