The Student Switch Off (SSO) campaign is an inter-dormitory energy-saving competition that has been running in the United Kingdom since 2006. Over the academic years 2014-15 and 2015-16 the campaign was adapted and run in Lithuania, Greece, Sweden and Cyprus in the frame of the IEE project SAVES. Through a series of engagement activities and instruments students were enabled, empowered and motivated to save energy in their dormitories by adopting specific actions such as switching off appliances when not in use.

SAVES2 is a H2020 project that builds on a previous IEE funded project, SAVES, that expanded the Student Switch Off campaign from the National Union of Students in the UK to 4 other EU countries.   The project commenced in May 2017 and will last for 42 months. National Union of Students (UK) is the lead organisation and the consortium incorporates 11 partners from 8 countries (Belgium, Bulgaria, Cyprus, Greece, Ireland, Lithuania, Romania, and the UK).

People spend up to 90% of their lives indoors, so it is perhaps not surprising that the quality of the environment created has a significant impact on their health and well-being. What is perhaps even more surprising is that the indoor air quality of some buildings, including modern low energy buildings, has been shown to be poorer than urban outdoor air quality.

A range of breakthrough eco-building solutions which tackle the emerging problem of indoor air quality have been presented by the ECO-SEE project at the Ecobuild construction fair in London.   The solutions include novel insulation, coating and panel products which improve air quality by passively regulating humidity, capturing VOCs, and removing indoor organic pollutants through photocatalysis. External and internal wall panels have also been developed, in addition to design tools to support end users.

Buildings and settlements are nowadays increasingly expected to meet higher and potentially more complex levels of performance. They should be sustainable, use zero-net energy, be healthy and comfortable, grid-friendly, yet economical to build and maintain. Buildings are central to the EU‘s energy efficiency policy. Improving the energy performance of Europe‘s building stock is crucial, not only to achieve the EU‘s 2020 targets but also to meet the longer term objectives of the climate strategy as laid down in the low carbon economy roadmap 2050.

The Hellenic Passive House Institute and its Cyprus office  organise the 1st Mediterranean Course and a Certification Exam for Passive House Designers, in Nicosia, Cyprus, in January 2017.   The course (duration: 70 hours), will be held by certified trainers  at the ETEK (Technical Chamber of Cyprus) facilities in Nicosia, with the authorisation of the Passive House Institute (PHI).

By the end of 2015, a series of free postgraduate level training courses in Nearly Zero Energy Buildings (NZEB) will begin around Europe. These ‘Professional Energy Skills in NZEB’ courses aim to empower building professionals through the development of skills in energy efficiency and integration of renewables in the retrofit of existing housing stock.   The program is for EU engineers, architects and building manager professionals who are interested in energy efficiency applied to buildings.

Design of a monitoring framework for performance assessment during operation (D7.1) | ZERO-PLUS project   The monitoring and evaluation of the four settlements’ (Cyprus, France, Italy and the UK) performance is an essential part of the ZERO-PLUS project.
