The Horizon 2020 funded TESSe2b project (Thermal Energy Storage Systems for Energy Efficient Buildings) will enable the optimal use of renewable energy and provide one of the most advantageous solutions for correcting the mismatch that often occurs between the supply and demand of energy in residential buildings. The target of TESSe2b is to design, develop, validate and demonstrate a modular and low cost thermal storage technology based on solar collectors and highly efficient heat pumps for heating, cooling and domestic hot water (DHW) production.

The Solar Keymark was created to certify solar thermal collectors and solar thermal systems, storages and controllers at European level. The aim is to reduce trade barriers and promote the use of high quality solar thermal products in the European market and beyond. The Solar Keymark is a CEN/CENELEC voluntary third-party certification mark for solar thermal products, demonstrating to end-users that a product conforms to the relevant European standards and fulfils additional requirements.

The school was built in 2012/13 as a public private partnership. The main energy related targets were to achieve passive house standard, to use prefabricated timber facades and renewable energy sources. The building should reach high indoor environment quality and fulfil the measures set in the Norwegian “Cities of the Future” - a collaboration between the government and the 13 largest cities in Norway to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and make the cities better places to live.
