In solar active houses the combination of solar thermal systems and heat storage systems can meet between 50 and 100 per cent of the heating requirements for space and domestic hot water heating. The German project “HeizSolar”, led by Fraunhofer Institute for Solar Energy Systems (ISE), has now analysed 9 different solar active houses over several heating seasons and investigated proportions of solar coverage from an economic, technical and practical point of view. They looked into different storage systems and sizes as well as collector efficiencies and sizes.

In order to increase the renewable energy share of the heating energy used in Germany, the market incentive programme for renewable energy sources for heating was revised, updated and improved. It now includes incentives for building owners, industry and municipalities in respect to solar thermal systems, biomass heating systems, heat pumps, deep geothermal plants and local district heating systems. Financial support can be given in two ways: subsidies for smaller systems and loans, at reduced rates, for bigger systems.

Retrofitting a district is quite different from retrofitting a single building as the technological challenges involved are far greater.The Cuarto de Marzo district of Valladolid, Spain is an area spreading over 21,000 square metres with 166 residences. It is now the focus of a retrofitting project called R2CITIES which is funded by the EU. Its objective: a 60% reduction in energy consumption in individual buildings and the district as a whole.

The EnergizAIR project will address a major need by filling the gap between two issues that are generally considered separately by people but which, in fact, are still deeply interlocked: energy consumption and renewable energy production.This will be done by communicating about energy needs covered by renewable energy.
