The Energy Efficiency Directive (2012/27/EU) introduced in 2012 an important new dimension to the energy saving in buildings legislative landscape. Article 4 requires Member States, for the first time, to set out national strategies for the renovation of their building stocks, thereby filling a major gap in policy concerning the existing building stock.

During the 6th edition of the Bativert Forum in Casablanca, the opening of the first extra European Construction21 platform was announced with the launch of Construction21 Morocco. The Moroccan cluster EMC becomes the first African chapter of the international network dedicated to the environmental transition in the building sector. "The risk of mortgage default is one-third lower for energy-efficient Energy-Star rated homes"... quoted in a Bloomberg financial news article of last year we uncovered while undertaking our own green mortgage research. Conclusive evidence that energy efficiency is good for bank's mortgage loan portfolios and that the greater the energy efficiency, the lower the risk default.

UNEP's Sustainable Buildings and Climate Initiative (UNEP-SBCI) has, together with Skanska and other partners, assessed ways and means for Greening the Building Supply Chain, which constitutes the purpose of this new report. While there is increasing awareneness and efforts to reduce energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions from buildings, the work to realize reduced material use, water consumption and waste generation in the overall delivery of buildings and throughout the construction system have been less advanced.
