CITyFiED Methodology is an integrated approach divided into seven phases, ranging from initial citywide diagnosis to final evaluation of the renovation. It includes an indicators tool and guidelines to support decision-making process.

In late October, the R2CITIES team met in Kartal, Turkey, for its second-to-last project meeting. As we look ahead to the final months of the project, our attention is on the monitoring of the works. This will allow us to build a picture of the energy savings and the overall sustainability of the endeavours over the last four years.

The CITyFiED project met at Istanbul Technical University, September 2017 and spent time visiting fellow consortium member Mir Unique Solutions and their in house centre of technology, called MITEC, Mir Innovation and Technology Centre. Mir have been at the heart of district heating solutions developed in Soma, Turkey and have developed an approach to industrial innovation benefiting projects around the world.

Earthquakes, buildings and green energy: Turkey’s balancing act
While Turkey is well known as a hot and sunny holiday destination, it also faces low temperatures, which means it has both substantial heating and cooling needs for its building stock. The country also lies in one of the world’s most active seismic zones and energy efficiency measures need to be earthquake resistant.

A smarter way to delivering large-scale change: the CITyFiED Methodology for Sustainable Urban Renovation at district level
Sustainable urban renovation is complex, particularly with respect to the decision making process, where a number of key stakeholders and several aspects need to be considered simultaneously. Evaluating and selecting alternative scenarios or measures to be implemented can be a substantial use of time and resources for cities.

URBAN GreenUP is a project funded under the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme. Under the coordination of CARTIF Technology Centre, 25 partners from 9 countries are working together to develop a new strategy for re-naturing cities through Nature-Based Solutions. Activities will take place in the three demonstrator cities of Valladolid (Spain), Liverpool (UK) and Izmir (Turkey) and will be replicated across Europe, Latin America and Asia. The project was officially launched in Valladolid on 7th June.
