The COVID-19 crisis has brought the EU to a crossroads. We have difficult choices to make and immediate recovery measures to develop. There is a real risk that COVID-19 could take the EU backwards to political fragmentation, economic stagnation and social breakdown. Alternatively, we can choose to launch common initiatives that will bind Europeans and the European Union closer together, provide the impetus for renewed economic activity shaped by the principles of the European Green Deal while addressing the inequalities in our society in an inclusive manner.

This year marks the 15thEuropean Sustainable Energy Week EUSEW.  Under the circumstances with Covid-19 the event was adapted to provide a dynamic, interactive and carefully organised online format. This effort has proved successful with more than 6300 registered participants and 4600 active online participants and some sessions of the policy conference gathering over 1500 registrations from people around the world.

Europe’s heating and cooling is a climate time bomb, with the sector responsible for almost half of the EU’s energy consumption and a third of its CO2 emissions. Ageing buildings bear much of the blame, with a large part of the energy used to heat our homes going to waste due to poor insulation. A wave of deep renovation is desperately needed, but that is not the whole story.

The scope is to provide a set of exemplary case studies to be further replicated in order to boost the building renovation rates among the EU Member States towards the reduction of 80% of energy demand by 2050.

As part of the European Green Deal, the Commission identified the importance of agreeing a new approach for exploiting Europe’s offshore renewable energy potential in a sustainable and inclusive way. The revised Commission Work Programme confirmed that a European offshore renewable energy strategy would be published before the end of 2020, aimed at giving a strategic direction for the ambitious development and integration of this type of energy by 2030 and 2050.

Buildings with EPCs registered   While it is not compulsory under the EPBD to set up a central/regional EPC register, almost all Member States have moved further than the obligations and set up a system to collect EPC data voluntarily. In 11 out of 28 Member States, in order to issue an EPC, this must be uploaded to the central database to be officially approved (BPIE, 2014).

Using Living Labs to roll out Sustainable Strategies for Energy Poor Individuals STEP-IN is a coordination and support project funded by the European Union’s Horizon 2020 programme.   The project develops an innovative global methodology for the effective analysis and tackling of energy poverty. It aims to develop methods and knowledge about how enhanced energy efficiency can improve quality of life and overall comfort levels.
