As part of the European Green Deal, the Commission will put forward a comprehensive plan to increase the EU’s 2030 climate target in September this year. The plan will propose to increase the EU’s current 2030 target of at least -40% greenhouse gas emission reductions to at least -50% and towards -55%, compared to 1990 emission levels.

In 2011, a detached house built in Mühltal outside Darmstadt in the 1970s became the first of its kind to be restored and converted into an ‘surplus energy’ house complete with electric vehicle technology.  Following the redevelopment, the building generates more energy than it requires. But this was not achieved by cramming the house full of new technology. It adheres to the highest interior standards and has a classic, timeless feel about it.

With 15 countries that announced to phase out coal burning since 2015, this guide reflects back on a wealth of policy experience gained in the last four years.   With the feedback of 20 experts across 10 countries, nine qualities that are needed for a successful coal phase-out were identified. The interviews from the experts allowed to highlight whether there were lessons to share and adding the nine qualities, the authors created a list of “dos and dont’s”.

In a letter sent to housing secretary Robert Jenrick, Khan points out that the proposed Future Homes Standard sets carbon reduction targets 25% lower than those detailed in the 2016 London plan. The Future Homes Standard is currently under consultation and is due to come into effect in the latter half of 2020, covering England only.
