The participating local authorities were awarded with first, second or third prize in four size categories. With Tacherting and Leutkirch im Allgäu taking first and Friedrich-Wilhelm-Lübke-Koog taking second place, Germany is still the number one in using renewable energies in Europe. However, challengers are getting stronger every year and three awardees (a first, a second and a third prize) are from France: Tramayes, Le Mené and Besançon.

GreenBuilding promotes improved energy efficiency through several measures such as thermal insulation, efficient heating and cooling, intelligent control systems and solar panels. The programme currently has 364 partners with 616 buildings, which achieved energy savings of 514 000 MWh in 2011. The winners are awarded in both new and refurbished buildings categories.GreenLight, which promotes highly efficient lighting, has currently 710 partners, who achieved total energy savings of 304 000 MWh in 2011.

The UK Technology Strategy Board will be funding individual companies and other organisations responsible for buildings for the total cost of evaluating the performance of case study buildings they design, build, own and/or operate. This will help builders and developers to deliver more efficient, better performing buildings.

The competition has been organised in cooperation with the German Association of Towns and Municipalities (DStGB) and the Association of German Counties, two municipal umbrella organisations. The German Federal Ministry of Economics and Technology (BMWi) is subsidising the competition.
