greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions

The Commission is in the process of updating some of the content on this website in light of the withdrawal of the United Kingdom from the European Union. If the site contains content that does not yet reflect the withdrawal of the United Kingdom, it is unintentional and will be addressed.

The document starts with a brief section listing the key outcomes of the Carbon Risk Real Estate Monitor (H2020 CRREM project).   Sections A provides an introduction to the CRREM project and background information on ‘stranding risk’. Section B describes global and EU policies on climate change mitigation as well as international standards on the assessment of greenhouse gases.

Concept and Objectives   Belgium must reach the climate goals! Look at the potential – Belgian energy use is 70% above European average – You can already tell that improvement is not only possible, it is vital. BE REEL! and its partners support these ambitious plans.   We aspire a renovation rate increase for which we develop, test, evaluate, refine and demonstrate the most appropriate structural measures.

The 2030 Framework for climate and energy sets as EU-wide targets for 2030 a 40% cut in greenhouse gas emissions compared to 1990 level, and at least a 27% share of renewable energy consumption. For the power system, this means a share of at least 45% of electricity demand generated from renewable sources (European Commission), compared to 27.5% in 2014 (Eurostat).

The buildings sector contributes nearly 40% to global energy-related annual GHG emissions (IEA/UNEP, 2018). Final energy demand from buildings is predicted to increase 50% by 2050 compared with 2015 levels under business as usual scenarios due to rapid urbanization and the doubling of the built surface area. Effective decarbonization of the buildings sector is therefore critical to meeting the Paris Agreement Goals and exceeding the current level of ambition in Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs).
